Many women are in relationships with bisexual men and women, either knowingly or unknowingly. This can bring up many strong, even conflicting, emotions such as shock (if they did not know of the partner’s bisexuality), anger, sorrow and betrayal. Many men have occasional or casual sex with men, yet they do not identify as gay, or even bisexual. Women should not feel guilty that somehow their behaviour has ’caused’ this situation to occur, or that their relationship is necessarily over because of their partner’s bisexuality. Sexual compromises can be worked out which suit both partners, but sensitivity and good communication is vital. In this situation professional counselling is advised, either at your community or women’s health centre, or through your local AIDS organisation, who can also help you discuss safe sex issues.
